Fig Newton Cookies (Italian)

A delicious treat, scented with citrus and filled with rich figs. They are covered in a white glaze and brightly-colored sprinkles, making them a perfect addition to your holiday festivities.

Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl and whisk. Then, incorporate the beaten egg and zest by mixing them in.

Step 1

Incorporate the butter slices into the flour-egg mixture by mixing until fully combined.

Step 2

On a lightly floured surface, shape the dough into a ball and divide it into two equal parts. Wrap and store each portion for later use.

Step 3

Soak the figs in hot water, then drain and squeeze out any excess water. In a food processor, combine the nuts, spices, and salt.

Step 4

Pulse the ingredients in the food processor until they form a thick paste, then transfer the mixture to a bowl and set it aside.

Step 5

In the food processor, combine the figs, raisins, candied orange, marmalade, and marsala wine and pulse until blended.

Step 6

Mix the fruit and nut mixture together until fully combined.

Step 7

Roll out the dough, add the filling, and shape it into a log. Then, roll the dough to encase the filling.

Step 8

Slice the log into 1¼-inch thick pieces and arrange them on a baking sheet. Bake, and repeat the process as needed.

Step 9

Prepare the glaze, mix together the powdered sugar and milk. Once the cookies have cooled, dip them into the glaze and then into the sprinkles.
