Traditional Zeppole Recipe

These are the best zeppole ever. Light, airy, and scented with orange zest

Let's get started!

Crispy exterior with a soft and fluffy interior scented with orange zest. They are similar to those found in bakeries across Italy.

Ingredients

Cut the butter and heat the milk. Then, Sprinkle yeast in the warm milk.

Step 1

Whisk the flour, sugar, and salt in a stand mixer bowl. Then, add milk mixture, beaten egg, zest, and vanilla.

Step 2

Beat the mixture, then add the butter and continue mixing on medium-low speed. Increase the speed until dough is smooth.

Step 3

Coat the medium bowl with vegetable oil and place the dough. Cover it with plastic wrap and let it sit for 45 minutes.

Step 4

Grease your hands with oil and roll small portions of the dough into a ball. Place them into the parchment paper and cover.

Step 5

Heat the vegetable oil and fry the zeppole in batches until golden brown.

Step 6

Transfer the cooked zeppole to the paper towels using a slotted spoon. Then, roll the warm zeppole in powdered sugar.
