Why you’ll love this pie

This banana cream pie will leave you dreaming for days of its’ goodness! It is silky, smooth, and light while remaining dense and custardy.

There is a secret step with the eggs that creates this dreamy consistency.

This is a tried and true recipe passed down from Jordan’s grandmother, Rhea. Trust me, this pie is called dreamy for a reason!

Banana Cream Pie is an old-fashioned pie. A tender and flaky pie crust is filled with layers of bananas and a rich, creamy custard.

It’s all topped off with mounds of freshly whipped cream. When it comes to dessert, you can’t go wrong with serving this luscious homemade pie.

Custard Filling

  • Sugar

  • Egg yolks
  • Pure vanilla extract
  • Butter
  • Bananas (sliced)
  • Heavy whipped cream (whipped and sweetened as desired) for topping

Homemade Custard Filling

There is a secret to the creamy custard that sets it apart from any other.

The egg whites are whipped until stiff peaks and added to the hot milk and egg custard mixture.

Units Scale

Prepare ONE recipe of either crust. Follow the blind bake instructions in the recipe.

Custard Filling

  • 6 tablespoons sugar (divided, 3 tablespoons each)
  • 6 tablespoons flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 egg yolks beaten (save egg whites in a clean bowl)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 3 ripe bananas (sliced)
  • 1 pint heavy whipped cream (whipped and sweetened as desired) for topping

Instructions

  1. Mix the first three ingredients (3 tablespoons sugar, flour, and salt) in a bowl with a whisk.
  2. Add milk to a medium saucepan and turn on medium heat.
  3. Immediately add the sugar flour mixture and stir until thick-, about 8-10 minutes. The mixture should be thick.
  4. Add the egg yolks and keep stirring for another few minutes.
  5. Last, add the butter and vanilla and mix until incorporated. Remove from heat and set aside.
  6. Beat the egg whites and remaining 3 tablespoons sugar until stiff peaks (but not meringue).
  7. Fold egg whites into the hot custard mixture.
  8. Place sliced bananas on the bottom of the prepared pie crust. Add custard on top to cover the bananas completely. Cover loosely with plastic wrap. Set in fridge for at least 2 hours up to 24 days (crust won’t be as fresh after two days).
  9. Before serving, add mounds of freshly whipped cream to the pie and serve!

  1. I decided to make banana cream pie for our Easter dessert because my parents were visiting. I remember learning as a child that my dad‘s favorite pie was banana cream pie. But my mom never made it. I don’t think she ever mastered it; it wasn’t that she didn’t want to make it for him. Anyway, you shared your recipe, and I thought it was perfect. I’ve never made a homemade custard before but it worked perfectly. I have a couple kiddos who are picky with fruit desserts, and everyone raved about it. We ate the leftovers tonight, and my youngest was quick to tell me again that he wasn’t sure he would like it, but that it’s one of his favorite desserts. I made homemade whipping cream, of course, and I did less powdered sugar than normal, but everybody was raving that they liked that it wasn’t super sweet. Thank you!!

    1. I LOVE this story. I am happy you and all the kids loved it. Yes, it is just the right amount of sweetness!

  2. I made this pie for my husband’s birthday. Banana cream pie is his favorite dessert and this did not disappoint!! He really loved it!! His father was also so impressed he kept saying how delicious it was. It will definitely be a birthday tradition going forward in our house! Thank you Elena

  3. Delicious pie! The recipe was clear and simple to follow, the outcome was so rewarding and the pie was a hit!

  4. Can this pie be made with a store-bought gram cracker crust pie crust?
