Mother Tongue
It happens the moment I land in the Roma, Italia airport and I hear, “buon giorno”. My heart skips a beat as the romance of the Italian language touches my ears. The sound, melody, and fluidity of the language create a dance inside my soul. It’s a connection since birth, as my mother tongue reminds me, you are home.
Language is a Dance
The roaring voices from conversations in all directions creates a chaos my ears yearn to hear. Language is more than a form of communication. It’s a sense of style, a state of mind, an expression you feel. Every language dances to the beat of a unique drum. My brain switches from one language to the other interchangeably, like a step, slide, and step waltz.
Deeper Meaning of Language
Digging even deeper in language, regional dialects and accents create a specific connection to a geographical place.
In Sardegna we speak with “un accento Sardo”. When I travel outside of Sardegna to other parts of Italia I’m always reminded of my southern Italian accent! A personal element I’ve grown to love and cherish.
Is it possible for language to also feel like a place?
Language that’s Alive
Even when I speak and hear Italian at home in America, it doesn’t seem to sound the same. Maybe it’s the energy I feel from the compilation of different voices speaking Italiano that makes my heart dance?
Whatever it is, I know the sounds of my mother tongue takes me to a place I love.
