Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Spaghetti Arrabbiata is a quick, simple, and delicious pasta dish cooked in a spicy tomato sauce. It’s the perfect pasta recipe with a spicy twist—a must-try.
The literal translation of sugo all arrabbiata is ”the angry sauce!” The hotness from the red chili flakes might make your face red to look mad or angry. You can adjust the spice level to make this a tomato-based sauce the whole family will love.

Simple Ingredients
Making this classic Italian pasta dish only takes a few essential ingredients; you likely have everything in your pantry to make this tonight.

- San Marzano Tomatoes: The star of the sauce, known for their natural sweetness and low acidity.
- Garlic: Adds bold, aromatic depth.
- Red Pepper Flakes (or Fresh Hot Peppers): Brings the signature heat.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Provides richness and a smooth base.
- Spaghetti (or Pasta of Choice): Use high-quality pasta with a rough texture so the sauce clings beautifully to every bite.
See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Variations & Substitutions
- Shortcut: Use garlic powder, chili powder, and onion powder in place of fresh ingredients for a quicker version. I prefer fresh, but these work in a pinch when you’re short on time.
- Make It Meaty: Turn this into a heartier sauce by adding ground beef or pork, similar to Italian Ragu Recipe.
- Add Peppers: While not traditional, diced orange or green bell peppers add a touch of sweetness and extra texture. Try my Easy Roasted Peppers and Garlic Pasta.
- Add Onion: For more depth, sauté ½ diced onion in olive oil for about 8 minutes before adding the garlic and remaining ingredients.

- Bring water to a boil in a 6 qt. pot. Season with salt. Add the spaghetti and give it a quick stir. Drain the spaghetti when cooked to al dente according to package instructions, and toss quickly in the saucepan.
Arrabbiata Sauce FAQs
Arrabbiata sauce tastes similar to a classic Italian tomato sauce, with chili flakes, red chili peppers, or dried chilis to kick it up a notch and add spice. You can use this spicy tomato sauce for pasta, meats, and fish.
You can make arrabbiata sauce using fresh tomatoes instead of canned tomatoes. Use about 500 grams of fresh tomatoes, finely chopped, and add them when you add the canned tomatoes to this recipe. Enjoy!
Don’t use a brand that uses a lot of citric acids to preserve freshness- or it can make the sauce acidic. Add a teaspoon of sugar if you end up with a little acidic sauce. I like to use whole tomatoes, such as San Marzano. Whole tomatoes are less processed since they aren’t diced or crushed by a machine. Use the best quality tomatoes for this easy homemade tomato sauce, and you will use this sauce on and with everything.
Let the arrabbiata sauce cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4–5 days. Reheat the sauce gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally until warmed through. Add a splash of water or broth if it has thickened too much. You can also microwave it in short intervals, stirring in between, until hot.
Serving Suggestions
I love serving this arrabbiata sauce recipe tossed with al dente pasta and finished fresh basil for a simple, classic dish. It pairs beautifully with mains like Baked Blackened Cod and Baked Chicken Thighs for a more filling meal. To round out the table, add sides like Steamed Asparagus or a Shaved Brussels Sprouts Salad, and finish with a dessert such as Italian S Cookies or Italian Cheesecake for the perfect Italian-inspired dinner.

My Pro Tips
Recipe Tips
- Cook Pasta Perfectly: Generously salt the boiling water so the pasta is seasoned from the inside out, and cook just until al dente for the best texture.
- Finish in the Sauce: Transfer the pasta directly to the pan and toss it with the warm sauce, allowing it to finish cooking and fully absorb the flavors.
- Reserve Pasta Water: Save a cup of the starchy cooking water and add a splash as needed to loosen the sauce and help it cling beautifully to the pasta.

I made this last night. The kids are silently around the table (always a great sign). Even the picky eaters enjoyed it! I will definitely make it again. It’s so much better than anything store-bought.
Yes! Silence and eating is always a great sign it is yummy! Happy everyone loved it.
This sauce was so good and so quick and easy. Pretty spicy but I loved the spice.
Yes, this sauce has a kick! Happy you loved it.
Excellent recipe just like my Nona’s (Cefalu, Sicily). I used Calabrian chili peppers, Sicilian sweet Basil (fresh from my garden), Parmesan Reggiano from Parma and Cento’s San Marzano tomatoes. What could go wrong? I made some homemade and oven baked Sicilian style meat balls (with raisins) to serve on the side. I used bronze cut Ronzoni Bucatini pasta.
Your meal sounds like a dream right now! I am happy you loved the arrabbiata sauce- It’s a favorite. I tone down the spice level for my children, and they love it too!
