Substitutions
Here are some substitutions you can make for certain ingredients in the baked pork chops recipe:
- Onion Powder and Garlic Powder: If you don’t have onion powder or garlic powder on hand, you can use fresh minced onion or garlic instead. Simply sauté the minced onion or garlic in the olive oil before adding the pork chops to the skillet. Alternatively, you can use onion salt or garlic salt, but be mindful of adjusting the amount of added salt accordingly.
- Brown Sugar: Substitute brown sugar with granulated sugar, honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, or even a sugar-free sweetener like erythritol or stevia. Keep in mind that different sweeteners may alter the flavor slightly, so adjust to taste.
- Paprika: Smoked paprika can be substituted for regular paprika to add a smoky flavor to the pork chops. You can also use chili powder, cayenne pepper, or a pinch of ground red pepper for added heat.
- Dried Thyme: If you don’t have dried thyme, you can substitute it with other dried herbs such as rosemary, oregano, basil, or Italian seasoning. Each herb will contribute its own unique flavor profile to the dish.
Variations
Here are some variations and additional options you can consider to customize the baked pork chops recipe:
- Marinade: Marinate the pork chops in your favorite marinade before cooking to infuse them with additional flavor. Popular marinade options include teriyaki, honey mustard, balsamic vinegar, or Italian dressing. Marinating the pork chops for at least 30 minutes, or even overnight in the refrigerator, will enhance their flavor.
- Cheese Topping: During the last few minutes of baking, add a layer of shredded cheese, such as cheddar, mozzarella, or Parmesan, on top of the pork chops. Broil the pork chops for a couple of minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly for an extra indulgent twist.
- Panko Parmesan Crusted Pork Chops: Mix together panko breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a shallow dish. Dip seasoned pork chops in beaten egg, then coat with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere. bake as directed.
Equipment
Here is the equipment you need to cook pork chops on the stove.
- Good Meat Thermometer– Remember to use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the pork chops to ensure they are cooked to your desired level of doneness.
- Baking Sheet– my favorite brand!
Storage and Reheating
Store your leftover pork chops in 3 easy steps:
- Allow the pork chops to cool to room temperature before storing them. This will help prevent condensation from forming inside the storage container, which can make the meat soggy.
- Store the pork chops in an airtight container or wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This will help to prevent air from getting in and keep the meat fresh.
- Store the pork chops in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. If you need to store them for longer, you can freeze them for up to 2-3 months.
To reheat the leftover pork chops, you can either reheat them in the microwave, in a skillet on the stove, or in the oven. Be sure to heat them to an internal temperature of at least 165°F to ensure they are safe to eat. Enjoy!
My Pro Tip
Recipe Tips
Here are the best tips for juicy pork chops every time!
- Choose Thick Pork Chops: Opt for pork chops that are at least 1 inch thick. Thicker chops are less likely to dry out during cooking, resulting in juicier and more flavorful meat.
- Brine the Pork Chops: Consider B
- Brining the pork chops in a solution of water, salt, and optional seasonings for 30 minutes to a few hours before cooking. Brining helps to tenderize the meat and infuse it with flavor, resulting in juicier pork chops.
- Bring Pork Chops to Room Temperature: Remove the pork chops from the refrigerator 30 minutes before cooking to allow them to come to room temperature. This ensures more even cooking throughout the meat.
- Preheat the Oven: Make sure your oven is fully preheated to the specified temperature before baking the pork chops.
- Use an Instant-Read Thermometer: To ensure the pork chops are cooked to the correct doneness without overcooking, use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. Pork chops are safe to eat when the internal temperature reaches 145°F (63°C). The cooking time and baking time will vary depending on the thickness and if they are bone-in chops.
- Let the Pork Chops Rest: Allow the pork chops to rest for a few minutes after removing them from the oven. Resting allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, resulting in a juicier and more tender texture.
FAQs
Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the pork chops. They are safe to eat when the internal temperature reaches 145°F (63°C). Alternatively, you can make a small cut in the center of the pork chop; if the juices run clear and there is no pink color, they are done.
It’s not necessary to cover pork chops with aluminum foil when baking them at a high temperature like 425°F (220°C). If you decide to cover them, the cooking time will be extended. Covered pork chops typically take 30-40 minutes- depending on size.
