Flavor Enhancers & Soup Serving Ideas
Below are some great ideas for side dishes, toppings, and more to pair alongside one of these amazing fall soup recipes. From crunchy croutons to rustic bread, and more!
- Toppings: Something simple, like croutons rubbed with garlic and olive oil, adds a lovely crunch to your soup. Other great toppings are gremolata, Parmesan curls, arugula walnut pesto, and pickled peppers.
- Easy side dishes: Try a veggie side Tuscan broccoli or roasted green beans, too. Bread like ciabatta bread and crusty bread are perfect for soaking up broth.
- Side salads: Try a tasty fall-inspired salad as a side dish to create an extra filling meal. Some of my go-tos are this Italian chopped salad, and goat cheese salad.
- Sandwiches: A cup of soup and a sandwich, like an Italian mortadella sandwich or grilled chicken sandwich, works for lunch or dinner.
Soup Storage & Meal Prep Tips
- Refrigeration directions: Place any leftover soup into a sealed jar or an airtight container. Depending on the recipe, it usually stays fresh for 3-4 days.
- Help with reheating leftovers: I highly recommend that you reheat leftover soup in a saucepan over low heat. Some of them reheat fine in the microwave, but the creamy soups especially need extra care. Thaw frozen soup in the refrigerator overnight to make it much easier to reheat for lunch or dinner.
- Freeze it in small portions: One of the best tips I can give is to freeze the soup into individual portions for easy access. Then, you can thaw only what you need! I do this often for meal prep.

Fall Soup Recipes FAQs
Some of the best fall soups include ones made with fall ingredients like squash and root vegetables, like my autumn squash soup. I find components like beans and hearty grains, like this mushroom barley soup to be the most filling and comforting. A good, rich broth just gives you cozy vibes!
There are so many ways to pack more flavor into a homemade soup! I love to saute aromatics like onions and garlic to release their oils to impart more flavor. Sometimes, a simple squeeze of lemon, simmering with a Parmesan rind, or sprinkling fresh herbs on top can take a soup to the next level. I love adding freshly chopped parsley for flavor and color.
Most soups will stay fresh in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. You’ll notice with creamy soups that there may be some separation. This is natural and an easy fix as long as you know how to reheat it properly.
There are endless serving possibilities, including roasted veggies, crispy and creamy polenta fries, salads, and rustic bread. My favorite is this sourdough rye bread to soak up the extra delicious broth!
As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, I hope these fall soup recipes bring comfort, warmth, and a little extra joy to your table. Whether you’re sharing with loved ones or savoring a quiet bowl on your own, each recipe is a little taste of home. Buon appetito, and happy cooking!
